Organizational Performance Management, earlier known as organizational Innovation and Deployment in CMMI v1.2 is a high maturity process area (HM PA) in CMMI v1.3. This is a core PA which underlines fundamentals of Continuous Improvement philosophy of CMMI.
Idea of this post is not to explain OPM process area wise or to reiterate what SEI has already detailed out in the CMMI manual but to clear out some misconceptions about this HM PA.
I am mentioning goals and practices from OPM here just to refresh your memory
OPM is not about introducing a new tool or checklist
Are they in line with Quality and Process Performance Objectives (QPPO) of your organization? In other words, ensure if the innovation (new tool, checklist etc) is going to help your organization in meeting the process objectives or not
OPM is not about intangible benefits
CMMI expects you to measure/quantify benefits of innovation
It is expected that you statistically validate changes in process capabilities pre and post improvements
OPM is not about a process in isolation
OPM takes inputs from Organization Process Performance (OPP) PA to decide the direction of innovation. OPP PA helps in finalizing the QPPOs
Outcomes of quantitatively managed projects confirms the innovation needs based on Causal Analysis
Innovation outcomes get reflected in process baselines of organization
Innovations become part of process for better institutionalization
